Englewood - East Hill
The existing home was a series of awkwardly situated single level buildings with minimal basement space and shallow foundations. The site is located 10 minutes from the GWB, roughly ¾ acre, and contains a beautiful natural brook along the northern edge of the property.

Due to the limiting placement of the existing building and shallow foundations, this site was an ideal location for a new construction. The site is located on a hill with access sloping down from the street. This meant drainage and access had to be carefully tailored around the slope of the site while providing an opportunity for three levels of living space with a walk out basement. We took time to appreciate the site, the quiet street, the bubbling brook, and its proximity to NYC.

Program:
1. Design a generous home that feels comfortable.
2. Be able to read a book anywhere in the house without the need for electric lights during the day.
3. Create a large open space that feels as comfortable for a family as it does for entertaining guests.
4. Guest suite on the first level.
5. Generous bedroom suites.
6. Design a master bedroom suite featuring a visual and audible connection to the brook.
7. Design a covered outdoor living/ cooking space that visually connects to the brook.
We began by locating the various program spaces according to convenience and connection to the brook. The garage and family entrance are located closest to the street. The large pantry closet is placed directly next to the garage for easy unloading followed by the kitchen.

The kitchen is deliberately kept open and airy without upper cabinets to instill a sense of calm. The large windows were located to align and define spaces. A 16 foot cathedral ceiling hovers over the dining and living space, creating a visual connection.
