Modern Ranch

The existing half acre site stood out for its generous size and prime location, situated within a comfortable walking distance between two downtowns and train stations. The convenience of the location was the key driving force.

Hillsdale is a welcoming town known for quality schools and an old stock of efficient housing. The goal was to create a simple, efficient, free flowing modern ranch home that would satisfy a young family and allow for future expansion.

1. Establish an indoor-outdoor connection.
2. Allow for natural light to fill the house.
3. Create a covered deck off the living space as an intermediary space between exterior and interior.
4. Separate the public and private functions of the home.
5. Allow for future floodwater to freely move below the house.

The new home featured a modified L-shaped plan that separated the public living spaces from the private functions of the home. The house sits on a series of concrete piers that elevate the first floor above the base flood elevation and allow water to freely pass through. The living, dining, and kitchen functions were accommodated by a single large space featuring vaulted ceilings, clearstory skylights, and a connected covered deck.

This created a light filled open space that welcomes hosting guests as well as a growing family. The private section of the home contains 4 bedrooms, 2 shared baths, a convenient laundry closet, and a serene primary suite enhanced with large windows and skylights to usher in daylight. The result is a home that welcomes guests, provides ample space for a growing family, and is dominated by natural light.
