Ridgewood Colonial

The existing home was a large center hall colonial situated on a generous lot for the neighborhood. The traditional façade and layout of the house presented well but was poorly executed and in need of revitalization.

The house was broken up into two parts, the main house and an unconnected second level bedroom suite above the attached garage. The disjointed arrangement made the home constricted and small despite its generous size. Additionally, the attached garage entry was located at the rear of the home and required dedicating an excessive amount of driveway.

1. Reconnect the main home to the space above the garage, making it all one.
2. Remodel the space above the garage as a master bedroom suite.
3. Additional second level bathrooms
4. Additional second level laundry.
5. Open and connect the kitchen to the living space and patio.
6. Revitalize all the spaces.
7. Build a 2-car detached garage and convert the existing attached garage to interior space.

Since the house already had most of the required spaces, remodeling and renovating was the most appropriate solution. The remodeled design removed the attached garage and roughly 50% of driveway by building a detached 2-car garage along the property line. This provided ample space for a new first level bedroom suite or playroom, and considerably increased the rear yard.

A patio was added just outside the living space instead of the excessive driveway. The second level space above the garage was remodeled and connected to the main house. New wood windows and traditional lap siding were installed throughout the house. All the bathrooms were renovated and a large new open kitchen was installed connecting the now open living space.
