Willard Colonial

The existing home was a deceivingly large colonial with an enclosed stair located on the side of the house. The large roof and small front dormer mask the three bedrooms inside. The existing home and four bedrooms were original, outdated and in need of revitalization.

There first level living spaces and kitchen were closed off and independent. A connection had to be made. The second level hallway featured a large inefficient landing area while the primary bedroom was detached from a bathroom. Additionally, a dormer over the front was left unfinished and underutilized.

1. Connect the living space with the kitchen in order to modernize special relationships.
2. Create a master bedroom suite with a dedicated bathroom and walk-in closet.
3. Create a laundry space on the second level to be more appropriate for a modern family.
4. Protect the basement from water penetration and finish to create a rec space.
5. Bring more natural light into the second level.
6. Create a covered outdoor patio area off the kitchen.
7. Revitalize the kitchen.
8. New wood windows and doors.
9. New roof
10. Sand and paint the existing cedar siding for longevity.

The plan for revitalizing this home was carefully considered to make as few major alterations as possible. Since the spaces were primarily intact, this project’s design and construction goal was to be deliberate and cost conscious.

The major structural alternation involved opening the wall, separating the kitchen and living. This connection instantly brought light, view, and a new relationship to the living spaces. Decorative coffered ceilings were used to visually accentuate and tie the spaces together. The kitchen was modernized and a large island was designed to further connect the living area and kitchen.

Upstairs, the inefficient landing area was reconfigured to be a part of the primary bedroom, expanding a dedicated bathroom. The unfinished dormer was utilized for a new bathroom which now created dedicated bathrooms to each bedroom. The result was a revitalized and modernized 4 bedroom, 5.1 bathroom home.
