Work/Play Garage

The existing 2-car garage, located in a suburban setting was an outdated structure in need of renovation. The structure was tight and barely accommodated a single car and storage.

The owner wanted to renovate the structure by utilizing the existing foundations and footprint. The ground floor space needed to accommodate one car and provide flexible storage area. The second level was intended as a recreation space and home office.
Upon construction it was discovered that the existing footings were inadequate for the revised garage.

Analysis of the town’s restrictive zoning policy revealed a few opportunities to create a two-level garage. The design featured a two-level garage space that contained parking and storage on the first level and the recreation space and office above. The main objective of the office space was to accommodate three connected desks to act as one long work surface.

The second level structure was thus cantilevered over the garage entry doors providing space for the desk as well as a canopy. Large windows bring lots of natural light and separate the office space from the lower level storage.
